DENTAL CROWNS

A dental crown is a cap fitted entirely over a damaged tooth to restore its strength and appearance, or over a dental implant to provide a natural-looking, functional replacement tooth. At Sydney Prosthodontic Group, crowns are planned and overseen by our specialist prosthodontists, with all laboratory work hand-crafted in Sydney by ceramists selected under Dr. Ben Lee's protocols.
What's involved
A dental crown is often recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a filling but doesn't need to be removed. At a specialist level, our prosthodontists can frequently work with very little remaining tooth structure — including below the gumline — and still achieve a strong, long-lasting result.
A crown can be cemented over your own tooth, or screwed into a supporting dental implant to function and look like a natural tooth. Both approaches are available at SPG depending on your clinical situation.
Material options
- Ceramic (all-porcelain): the most natural-looking option, typically preferred for front teeth and visible areas.
- Metal: highly durable, generally reserved for back teeth where aesthetics matter less and biting force is highest.
- Metal-ceramic (combination): combines the strength of a metal substructure with a porcelain surface for aesthetics.
All materials used are of the highest international quality. Your specialist will recommend the most suitable option based on the tooth's location, your bite, and your aesthetic priorities.
How long does a crown last?
With good care and regular review, a well-made crown can last many years — well-fitted ceramic and metal-ceramic crowns commonly serve patients for over a decade, with implant-supported crowns having a reported survival rate of around 90% at 10 years. Longevity depends on oral hygiene, bite forces, and management of habits such as teeth grinding.
