WHAT IS A PROSTHODONTIST
A prosthodontist is a registered dental specialist who has received an extra 3 years of full-time post-graduate training. They specialise in restoring teeth (with fillings, crowns or veneers) and replacing teeth (with dentures, bridges or implants), to create beautiful smiles and improve chewing so that you can live your life to the fullest.
This qualification must then be registered through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) before it is recognised by the Dental Board of Australia and the title of “specialist prosthodontist” can be used. You can check whether a dentist is a registered prosthodontist from AHPRA’s website.
Once a prosthodontist becomes a registered specialist, the expected standard of care is elevated and you are, therefore, protected by law to receive such care. In simple terms, prosthodontists are the accredited experts in restoring and replacing teeth at the highest expected level of care.
HOW WE CAN HELP YOU
Patients commonly see us when they have the following concerns:
- One or more missing teeth requiring replacement
- Failing teeth requiring extraction and replacement
- Broken teeth
- Unattractive smile
- Previous dental work that is failing
Complex dental work required
Worn-down teeth due to clenching & grinding
- Worn or sensitive teeth due to erosion
- Gaps or spaces between teeth
- Bite does not feel right
- Dental trauma
- Jaw pain, clicking or locking (i.e. temporomandibular disorder or TMD)
Complex dental issues requiring comprehensive treatment-planning and potential coordination with other dental specialists
Prosthodontists are much the same as architects, but for your mouth. We are the specialists that other dentists turn to for help in the restoration and function of your teeth, and the appearance of your smile. We provide assessment, design, treatment plans, and the coordination and completion of treatment.
Prosthodontists could also be considered your personal dental managers. If you have a complex dental problem, we are the most suitable specialist to formulate a comprehensive treatment plan from the very beginning. From start to finish, we liaise with all parties involved to oversee your entire treatment process, ensuring the best possible outcome.
Given our specialised training and considerable clinical experience, we are the specialists most suitable for performing dental implant surgeries, including bone grafting and sinus lifts; dental implant crowns and bridges; cosmetic dentistry using veneers; complex restorations using crowns and bridges; and full mouth dental treatment.
